What is RPR? RPR stands for Regenerating Perennial Ryegrass. It refers to a unique group of Barenbrug bred grass cultivars of perennial ryegrasses that produce determinate stolons as they develop and grow.

What are determinate stolons and what is so special about them?
Stolons, sometimes called "runners" are growth shoots emerging from auxiliary buds at the base of a grass plant. They grow horizontally just below the soil surface and will develop roots at subsequent internodes, in turn developing entirely new plants. This is a form of asexual or vegetative reproduction.

Determinate stolons differ from typical stolons in that the new plants have an end point - a terminal -- they will produce a flower and hence reproduce sexually if able to.

Normal perennial ryegrasses used on sports pitches (such as football and rugby) and golf courses don't usually do this. They are tufted grass plants that will not exhibit a creeping growth habit.

The RPR concept is so unique that, in the USA, a new sub-species classification has been confirmed, Lolium perenne stoloniferum, based on the determinate stolons and aggressive spreading habit.

It is patented in the US. RPR is an unique grass seed cultivar.
