The waters off of the Cape of Cape Sable Island were once some of the most treacherous waters in the North Atlantic. We’re exploring these islands and uncovering the remains of one of the island’s darkest nights - the night the Allan Liner Hungarian wrecked off its shore with no survivors, but this island’s story is so much more than I expected. Some of these incredible stories include the installation of a Marconi Telegraph station and tower here on the island, which would later end up relaying the Titanic's distress calls, and the story of the wreck of the brig "Friendship", which resulted in a wedding!

We’re traveling out to the southernmost tip of Nova Scotia and out onto these different islands, uncovering forgotten evidence of some incredible stories. We look at the old ruins of several old homes and even find traces of where the eyewitnesses of the Hungarian disaster set up a fire as a signal to those aboard the ship.

The Horrifying Wreck of the SS Hungarian:    • The Horrifying Wreck of the SS HUNGAR...

This video is meant as a companion to my larger documentary on the wreck of the SS Hungarian, which wrecked off shore here in February, 1860. This video won’t tell you the full story of the disaster, the main documentary does that, but this video instead is going into more of the local perspective and explore historical sites still on the island today, as well as dive into a few interesting tales from the general history of these islands.

The Allan Liner SS Hungarian entered service in 1859, steaming between Liverpool and Quebec, Canada. In February, 1860, the ship went down off of Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia, with no survivors.
