For neither ending/beginning nor greatness/madness can be told apart in a binary way.
Maybe it's only a fantasy trope, but the parallels between "the wise old leader" with powerful abilities and yet a tendency to madness or at least self-inflatation appears very often in movies and sometimes even in history once you payed attention to it.
