The 96 mile (155 km) West Highland Way is Scotland’s premier long-distance walking route, connecting the lowland town of Milngavie, on the outskirts of Glasgow, with the regional Highlands hub of Fort William, at the foot of Ben Nevis. The West Highland Way’s impressive scenery, ease of access, and abundance of camping and accommodation options make it popular with novice walkers and seasoned hikers alike.

Despite living in Glasgow, just a few train stops from the start of this route, for over a decade in our twenties and thirties, this was our first time walking the Way. Having heard so much about it from international hikers on our travels around the world, we decided it should be the first trail we tackle upon returning to Scotland.

We chose to wild camp the West Highland Way (which is legal under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code) because this is our favourite way to experience the outdoors. It’s also free, and requires little advance planning compared to booking accommodation or campsites. We walked the route over 7.5 days at the end of April/start of May 2022.
