Joanna visits with Forrest Wynne, Kentucky State University Aquaculture Specialist to discuss algae control in ponds.
Copper sulfate and chelated copper products are contact algaecides commonly available at farm and garden supply stores. Two formulations of copper sulfate are sold, acidified crystals and liquid formulations. Copper products should be used when water temperatures are at least 60 degrees F. Water should be tested for total alkalinity. Alkalinity is the ability of the water to buffer acids. Copper sulfate is less effective and will precipitate out of solution when total alkalinity exceeds 250 mg/L (ppm). Alternatively, applying copper products is risky when total alkalinity is less than 30 mg/L (ppm). These chemicals can be acutely toxic to some fish, particularly trout and koi. shoreline and spot treatments are recommended during the warm summer months. Portions of the pond may be treated over a period of weeks during warm weather. Small amounts of product may be mixed with clean water in a sprayer and applied to the surface of floating algal mats. Whole pond copper applications should be applied when water temperatures are relatively cool during spring or fall. The water volume must be determined in acre feet by measuring the surface area of the pond and multiplying it by the average of depth. Contact your Extension office for additional information.
