Today, we're sharing a lunch with our villagers as well as anyone who passes by. Mango Curry Prepared with Jadi Fish and Banana Mallum (මැල්ලුම) along with White Rice. Mallum is a lightly cooked/sautée vegetable cooked with grated coconut. Father always says this is what our ancestors used to eat and they were strong and healthy.

In Sri Lanka there is this concept called Dansala, it is a free meal for anyone who passes by, anyone can stop by and enjoy a meal for absolutely free.

This is how this started.Two weeks ago my father made a pot of fermented fish, also called Salted Fish, Jadi Fish or Simply 'Jadi'. Jadi is a simple way to preserve any kind of fish. It's an old method that keeps fish fresh for a long time without a fridge. We used small, freshly caught fish for this recipe. First, we cleaned them with saltwater. Then, we put them in a clay pot with salt and garcinia, sealed the pot, and left it in a dry place for few weeks. The result is like dried fish (karavala), but a little salty.

Jadi Fish isn't just for preserving, it can be used in lots of tasty recipes! In this video, we made a yummy mango curry with Jadi Fish and Banana Mallum. It's a famous village dish in Sri Lanka. We took four big bananas and turned them into a tasty meal with grated coconut. This recipe is popular at traditional village gatherings where everyone helps cook. Lunch is ready!
