The enchanting world of Catinaccio covered in summertime snow - it was really chillingly cold with gusty icy winds on our hike on the acient old sheep path Vial de le Feide, a beautiful path with great views to the inside of Catinaccio including Vajolet and Passo Principe, but also to the surrounding moutain groups.
Rifugio Roda di Vael is located beautifully at the feed of Roda di Vael (Rotwand = red wall) and Roda del Diavolo (Teulfelswand = devil's wall), but extraordinarily crowded. Not only that it is a well-known overnight stay on different dolomite and catinaccio routes, it can be reached with little effort on easy paths from Passo Costalunga and Paolina chairlift - at least the snow kept the fipflops away. Even more worth to mention how nice the staff and how good the service was.
We took the way back via Malga Roda di Vael to Vigo di Fassa - easier than going without snow and ice and the path - but the area asks for more like, e.g., exploring Passo Cigolade.

This hike was fun because we were well equipped including Grappette (German: Grödel, English: Spikes). Without it would have been dangerous and beyond common sense. I would like to ask all the unprepared Alta Via hikers from abroad, please, get informed. Grappette may help staying save - not just for yourself, but also for the mountain rescuers saving you. In case of a weather change, please, do yourself the favor to skip one night, get equipped in the closest valley village and get back up the next day.

Please, only go to the mountains well equipped - especially to the Dolomites. And, please, respect no fly zones - Roda di Vael is just outside of Parco Naturale dello Scilliar-Catinaccio.
