The term rounded shoulders is used to describe a resting shoulder position that has moved forward from the body’s ideal alignment. They are typically thought to be caused by poor habits like texting or working at a desk job, but this is a common misconception. Rather, rounded shoulders are caused by imbalances within your nervous system beginning at the sensory level and ending at the muscular level.

What is proprioception and why is it important?
Proprioception is one of our senses that lets us perceive the location, movement, and action of different parts of the body. One such sensory organ is your foot, which has small sensory receptors embedded in its skin. Every time your foot makes contact with the ground, the receptors become activated and send an electrical (neuronal) signal to your brain.

Your brain takes this information and figures out where you are positioned in your environment. The brain then plans its next step for you, and it does so by creating a motor command that is sent back towards your feet. However, some of the commands are also sent to other areas of your body, such as your core. This is because when you are standing, multiple muscles are engaged to resist gravity.

What causes rounded shoulders?
If your feet fail to send a good signal to your brain, the resulting motor commands will not be as great either. This culminates in muscular weakness and imbalances at various levels of the body, including your shoulders.

Why would your feet send a bad signal to your brain? It is not that your feet are inherently doing something wrong. Instead, it is the years of poor sensory stimulation caused by various factors that eventually lead your feet to adopt a suboptimal posture.

In the clinic, this is observed by looking at the client’s footprint. Uneven footprints indicate an uneven distribution of your body weight onto your feet, which further perpetuates poor posture. A cycle that you cannot consciously control either.

Can rounded shoulders be corrected?
When your feet have imbalances, your spine will curve unnaturally causing the appearance of hunched and rounded shoulders. Fortunately, this is reversible through proprioceptive training, which is an intervention that targets the improvement of proprioceptive function.

The goal is to stimulate the entirety of your feet equally such that over time, they adopt a healthy posture. The minimal recommended period to observe significant differences is 6 weeks, given that your feet are being stimulated 24/7, seven days on seven.
