Dear Caregivers:

At kawanimals we believe the most important value is kindness: to others, ourselves and our planet. To be kind to ourselves we must start by understanding and recognizing our feelings.

Some feelings are easier than others, but we all feel them and they are part of us. When we understand and accept them, we learn to verbalize and manage them, therefore building our emotional intelligence.

Learning about our own feelings helps us recognize them in others: a magical power called empathy, the pathway to being kind to others.
This book will help your children understand their own feelings, and the reactions that come along with them.

In order to create content that your children can easily understand we have made modifications from standard psychological terminology:
1. Technically, there are emotions (the 6 basic ones in the beginning of the book) which are physiological responses, and there are feelings which are cognitive responses. For educational purposes we have labeled them all as feelings.

2. We use the words “good” and “bad” as a way to approach children in a language they can understand, but there are no good or bad feelings. There are easy and hard ones. Remind children that all feelings come and go, even the fun ones. Each and every one of them passes. Together think of coping strategies for navigating difficult feelings (like breathing exercises, holding a plush, getting a hug, etc.).

Help your kids identify and share their feelings throughout the day. Reflect on these feelings without judgment. We encourage you to share your own feelings with your children to normalize these types of conversations. This will also help them realize that experiencing feelings is normal for everyone. By demonstrating a healthy emotional intelligence, you set a positive example for them to follow.

We hope you enjoy this video!
