Long ago the Shiobara Onsen area was a lake. Thanks to this lake the fossils of aquatic life and leaves can be found in the area. Konouha Fossil Place is located in Shiobara you can see examples of fossils from the Shiobara area, alongside fossils and minerals from around the world.

One of the biggest draws of Konouha Fossil Place is trying to find your own fossils. For 700 yen you get five rocks you can try to break open and find leaf fossils. It turns out my wife is a lot better at this than I am.
