Julian Saporiti calls the No No Boy project simply “a school project run amok," however, this is certainly an understatement.
Check out this unique session where Julian and his partner Emilia Halvorsen beautifully perform two songs “Imperial Twist” and “Khmerica” from No No Boy’s album 1975, released in 2021 on Smithsonian Folkway Recordings.

In this record Julian essentially extracts a chapter from his PHD dissertation at Brown University, using his research to write songs. These songs shed light on little-known stories on primarily Asian American history that cover topics such as immigration and refugees.

“I wanted to collect these small stories from my research and put them to music, so we can go around and play concerts for people and kind of teach a little bit, and hopefully the tunes stand on their own, so that’s the No No Boy project,” Julian said.
