About the place where I went.
The Whistling Village of India, Kongthong, is a remote village nestled in the East Khasi hills in the district of Meghalaya, around 60 kilometers from the state capital, Shillong. The village is home to about 80 households and 900 inhabitants who speak the Khasi language and primarily rely on farming for their livelihoods. The village is known for its unique tradition where each newborn is assigned both a regular name and a unique tune, which is their identity for the rest of their life. This tradition is so deeply ingrained that the place has earned the title of the "whistling village".

The unique tunes or melodies, known as "jingrwai iawbei" or "mother’s love song", are composed by the mother within two to three weeks of the child's birth. The child actually gets three names: a regular name for official purposes, a long tune, and its shorter version. The longer tune, typically 8-10 seconds long, is used to call fellow villagers from a distance in the forest or fields, while the shorter one, lasting 3-4 seconds, is generally used at home. The longer tune is simply a repetition of the shorter one. The uniqueness of the song lies in the fact that no two songs can be similar, just like the names of the people.

Despite its remote location and lack of full health and education facilities, the unique identity of the village attracts tourists from all over the world, helping to sustain the local economy. The villagers are proud of their unique culture and are doing their best to preserve it. The Indian Ministry of Tourism even nominated Kongthong for entry to the UNWTO (The World Tourism Organization) Best Tourism Village awards in India.
