I tried the return to home option on the Yuneec Typhoon Q500+ 4K video drone. Here you see 3 actions. All of them worked perfectly.

After pulling the Home switch on your transmitter the Typhoon first flies horizontaly just above the transmitter and then it descends. In 3 attempts it never landed closer to me than 5 meters. So you have to make sure never to use the Home option when the area around is not safe to land, like sand or water.
