Abderramán III preparó la Campaña del Supremo Poder o de la Omnipotencia, una campaña militar de grandes dimensiones que buscaba derrotar y someter al Reino de León para que toda la península volviese a ser controlada por los musulmanes.

Ramiro II solicitó ayuda a García Sánchez y Fernán González, y con el ejército listo, partió a la margen derecha del río Pisuerga, donde se enfrentaría en una batalla campal a las tropas cordobesas. Esta batalla sería una de las más importantes de la reconquista pues el ejército musulmán tuvo que batirse en retirada ante la presión leonesa.

Pero lo más importante fue que tras la batalla de Simancas tuvo lugar la Batalla de Alhándega, o quizá sería mejor llamarla "LA EMBOSCADA". Las tropas de Ramiro cercaron y aplastaron a los sarracenos.
