Last week I had the opportunity at the end of the day to use a client's FX9 and shoot some test video side-by-side with my FX6. I don't want to mention the clients by name, but I couldn't have done it without their cooperation and assistance. Thank you.

I have a rig that allows me to mount both cameras on the same tripod to shoot simultaneously. I only had a about 30 minutes to setup and shoot the test, so I wish I had more time, but I got what I could in the limited time that was available. Even with that time limit I think I got enough footage that conclusions can be drawn regarding the relative performance of each camera, especially for auto-focus.

Both cameras were set for 3840x2160 XAVC-I @ 29.97p

Each camera was mounted with a Sony FE 90mm F2.8 G OSS lens. I swapped lenses after clip 0002 just to make sure the differences in auto-focusing performance I was seeing were not due to the lens. As expected, swapping lenses made no difference.

I set both cameras for Sony's proprietary S-Cinetone shooting mode, which is designed to provide a "What You See Is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) look that won't require grading in post. All the other paint menus on both cameras were on their default settings. I also set both cameras up with the same auto-focus settings, and white balanced both cameras on the same white card, once indoors and once again outdoors.
