H.P. Lovecraft is widely regarded as the father of cosmic horror—a genre built around the notion that humanity is insignificant in the vast and uncaring universe. While ‘The White Ship,’ published in 1919, does not explicitly tie into the famed Cthulhu Mythos, it still resonates with themes of the unknown, otherworldly beings, and unattainable mysteries. It even hints at some of the dreamlike locations later mentioned in ‘The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath.’ In many ways, it is a precursor to Lovecraft’s shift from fantasy to his iconic cosmic horror.
