Science fiction movie #flying can be considered as one of the most basic and popular superpowers in superheros. Other than reality, conquering the sky has become easier than ever for many screen superheroes, allowing them to easily engage in aerial combat and diversify their skills and combat tactics.

To bring those unrealistic things to the silver screen in the most convincing way, filmmakers will of course have to apply a lot of different techniques and effects to deceive the audience’s vision. Referring to “skills”, many people will immediately think of “computer techniques” or “graphic techniques”, which are increasingly developing and more sophisticated. However, since the 50s of the last century, Hollywood has found many ways to perform flying scenes on the screen without the need for computer intervention.

The development of technology has allowed producers the opportunity and conditions to perform flight scenes in more subtle, complex ways. However, there is a technique that they still apply throughout the decades, even today: It is using protective cables, especially in scenes of direct flight in the air.

In addition, there are still quite a few other methods used by Hollywood producers to perform flying segments. These include the use of balance plates, tuning forks, or some more modern techniques such as robotic arms. Of course, the supporting props are only a part, the actors themselves also have to exercise very well to be able to fully perform such overhead scenes.
