Ramsey's first scoliosis diagnosis showed a low curve of about 10 degrees. I knew to check for it because I had scoliosis growing up, and when my curves were significant enough, I went through bracing. Back then, before the internet was widespread, we couldn't research other options. I always felt there had to be more than just wearing a Boston brace, which I used at that time. When my oldest daughter was around 9 or 10, we noticed signs of scoliosis in her.

Parents often ask if scoliosis is 100% genetic. Studies on identical twins show that only 60% of both twins share scoliosis, while in 40% of cases, only one does. Scoliosis isn't fully genetic, but it is familial, meaning if someone in the family has it, there’s a higher chance another family member might develop it, though it’s not guaranteed.

Being vigilant in evaluating children, especially during growth, is crucial if scoliosis runs in the family. Just because one person has a severe curve doesn’t mean others will. When we saw Francis's curve and considered Trinity’s untreated, significant scoliosis, we decided to manage and reduce Francis's scoliosis to prevent progression.

We researched and found the ScoliBrace, and through our chiropractor, we connected with Dr. Nalda. Within a year and a half, Francis's curve progressed from 10 degrees to 19-20 degrees. The treatment process here is intense—not physically painful, but emotionally challenging, as it requires children to commit several days, often during vacation.

Scoliosis progresses rapidly during growth. If treated slowly, it can worsen faster than you can reduce it. Scoliosis also tends to rebound, trying to return to its original position because it’s developmental, not injury-induced. A high-dose, short-term program is necessary to reduce it quickly and maintain that reduction.

We're pleased with the results. Ramsey's curves, initially around 20 degrees, have been reduced by nearly 50%, with an 8-10 degree improvement in just one week of treatment. It’s a big learning process, but I feel confident in the care provided.

I train my team extensively to ensure they provide the best care because it's impossible to treat every patient personally. My goal is to prevent as many surgeries as possible, so having a well-trained team delivering effective care is essential. The treatment process is repetitive, which can be tedious for patients, so keeping them motivated is important for success.

If we can maintain this reduction with continued bracing and therapy, we’re on the right track, and that's our goal.
