The Parliamentary Republic of Poland, whose Capital is Warsaw, has a Population of 37,908,000 inhabitants in an Area of 312,696 km2. The official language is Polish, a Slavic language of the Western group, and its currency is the Polish zloty. Poland is a Catholic country.
Poland is located in the center of Europe, bordered by Germany to the west, the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south, Ukraine and Belarus to the east, and the Baltic Sea to the north. Poland's relief is varied, with mountainous areas, plateaus and plains. The main mountain ranges are the Carpathians in the south, the Sudetes in the west and the Tatras Mountains in the southwest.
Poland's climate is temperate continental, with warm summers and cold winters. The average temperature in Warsaw in January is 3°C below zero, and in July it is 19°C.
The Kingdom of Poland was founded in 1025, and in 1569 it joined the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to form the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which disintegrated in 1795 when Poland was divided between Russia, Prussia and Austria.
Poland regained its independence in 1918, but was invaded by Germany and the Red Army during World War II. After the war, Poland became a satellite state of the Soviet Union. In 1989, Poland liberated itself from communism and became a democracy.
Today Poland is a mixed economy with a growing private sector. The industrial sector is the main driver of the Polish economy, and the main industrial products are steel, automobiles, machinery and electronics.
The service sector is also important in the economy, and the main services are tourism, commerce and banking.
The Polish population is ethnically homogeneous, with 98% of the population identifying as Polish. There are small minorities of Germans, Jews and Ukrainians, the latter of which have grown in number over the past two years.
According to the Polish Institute of Demography, 3.6% of Polish women married foreigners. The percentage has been increasing in recent years, and is expected to continue increasing in the future.
