• Emphasizing Gradual Complexity: Angelos emphasized that they are introducing the level of complexity gradually in the scenarios, starting with short, brief scenarios to benefit the learning process.
o Learning Process: Angelos highlighted that this gradual introduction of complexity is designed to benefit the learning process, allowing participants to develop their skills progressively.
• Scenario Discussion: Client Sharing Complex Story: Eleni presented another scenario where a client is sharing a complex personal story, speaking rapidly and becoming emotional. Eva and Angelos discussed the importance of active listening and being present.
o Scenario Presentation: Eleni presented a scenario where a client is sharing a complex personal story, speaking rapidly and becoming increasingly emotional. This scenario is common in coaching sessions and requires careful handling.
o Active Listening: Eva emphasized the importance of active listening, explaining that it involves paying attention to the client's words, emotions, and non-verbal cues. She noted that active listening helps the coach understand the client's situation and respond appropriately.
o Being Present: Eva and Angelos discussed the need for the coach to be fully present during the session, which includes being empathetic and creating a safe space for the client to share their story.
• Evaluating Responses to Complex Story: Eva and Angelos evaluated different responses to the scenario, emphasizing the importance of active listening and not making assumptions. They concluded that the best response is to listen carefully and encourage the client to continue.
o Response Evaluation: Eva and Angelos evaluated four possible responses to the scenario: (A) "Slow down please. I'm trying to follow you," (B) "Let's take a break. You seem overwhelmed," (C) "I'm listening carefully. Please continue," and (D) "It sounds like you're feeling a lot of stress."
o Best Response: They concluded that the best response is (C) "I'm listening carefully. Please continue," as it validates the client's need to express themselves and shows that the coach is fully engaged in the conversation.
o Worst Response: They identified response (A) "Slow down please. I'm trying to follow you," as the worst response because it interrupts the session and can be perceived as disrespectful and judgmental.
• Importance of Active Listening: Eva and Angelos discussed the importance of active listening in coaching, including listening for emotions, non-verbal cues, and being present. They highlighted that active listening is crucial for understanding the client and helping them move forward.
o Listening for Emotions: Eva explained that active listening involves paying attention to the client's emotions and understanding their emotional state. This helps the coach respond appropriately and support the client's needs.
o Non-Verbal Cues: Eva and Angelos discussed the importance of observing non-verbal cues, such as body language and facial expressions, as these can provide additional insights into the client's feelings and thoughts.
o Being Present: They emphasized that being present is a key component of active listening. This means being fully engaged in the conversation and creating a safe space for the client to share their thoughts and feelings.
o Understanding Client: Active listening is crucial for understanding the client and their situation. By listening carefully and observing non-verbal cues, the coach can gain a deeper understanding of the client's needs and help them move forward.
