Created by Laurence Gieringer in 1935, Roadside America was once the world’s greatest miniature village and model train layout. Originally displayed in his private residence, he soon outgrew that location, and by 1941 an old dancehall was purchased to permanently house his masterpiece, where it stood until 2021. The amazing roadside attractions had been unchanged since Laurence’s passing in 1963, and continued to entertained kids and adults for decades. Featuring waterfalls, interactive elements, caves to walk though, an upper viewing deck, and a nighttime show every half hour, the layout was an amazing work of art. Unfortunately by the 2000’s attendance began to decline, and with the pandemic of 2020 closing the attraction for some time, the display would be permanently closed by 2021. The layout sadly was cut into pieces and auctioned off to those wanting to a hold onto a piece of something that meant so much to so many. Today the original building still stands along side the Pennsylvania Dutch Gift Haus that sold “Dutch” goods and foods next door. The property is normally off limits and marked with no trespassing signs, though on this particular day the gates were open allowing access. Four of the original roadside billboards are also still erected proudly announcing what once was (and to many will always be) the world’s greatest roadside attraction.
