Jesus began this portion of His sermon by warning the Jews of displaying external righteousness to gain the attention of people, without being right with God.

As a display of external righteousness, they gave to the poor to impress people, prayed publicly to gain attention, and prayed repeatedly and meaninglessly thinking that gained God’s attention.

Therefore, to teach the Jews how to talk to God, Jesus gave them an example of an Old Covenant prayer. This example was NOT a New Covenant prayer for Christians as evidenced by the conditional clauses. Jesus added at the end of His example that if they wanted to be forgiven by God, they had to reflect God and be forgiving.

It is important to remember the context was Jews living under that Old Covenant. Forget this fact and Jesus’ teaching will not be understood.
