`Kajla Didi' is an immortal poem of renowned poet Jatindra Mohan Bagchi. The Poet composed his famous poem 'Kajla Didi' sitting on the bank of the historical Kajal Dighi.
The traditional dighi covers an area of about 26 acres of Kharija Kajol Dighi under Boda Upazila. The area of the four banks of the lake is 11.3 acres and the area of water body is 15.30 acres. No clear history of who, when & why dug this tank is known.
Many of the historical dighis excavated at different times of antiquity are associated with various fascinating events and legends. There is a long story surrounding this historical Kazal Dighi.
According to legend, a king lived on the south bank of this lake a long time ago. The king had seven queens, but the king was childless. Once a monk gave three fruits as a gift to the younger queen and told - by eating which the younger queen would have a child. But, the younger queen cannot eat the fruit due to the conspiracy of the elder queens. The younger queen devoured the leftover of fruits peels with devotion. With the blessing of the monk, she became a mother in due time. A flood of joy swept across the kingdom. The daughter was named 'Kajalini'.
Their days were spent happily with the arrival of their daughter. However, a severe drought caused a sudden famine across the state. In this situation, the king, on the advice of the monk, dug a huge tank to alleviate the water crisis in the kingdom. Surprisingly, after digging very deep, no water came up in the tank. In this situation, the king again sought the advice of the monk. The monk advised with a serious face, the water god must be appeased. And only Princess Kajalini herself can do that.
Hearing the monk, the king's chest trembled with an unknown fear. But, the king is helpless. Because, the people were looking to him for water. At last the princess Kajalini slowly came to the middle of the pond on foot with the offering of worship. Tribute was offered in devotion to the water god. Suddenly water came from all around. It swallowed Kajalini. Princes Kajalini could not get up from the pond. Seeing this tragic outcome of Princess Kajalini, the sky-wind was filled with lamentations that broke the hearts of hundreds of people gathered on the bank of the pond. But, the princess Kajalini did not survive. Then, to preserve the memory of princess Kajalini, the king named the tank as 'Kajal Dighi' - which still immortalizes the memory of Princess Kajalini.
