Following India's independence in 1947, the Britain–India–Nepal Tripartite Agreement led to the transfer of six Gorkha regiments, which were originally a part of the British Indian Army, to the Indian Army. These regiments have been serving in the Indian Army since then. The soldiers in these regiments primarily belong to the ethnic Gurkha communities from India and Nepal.
