NGO DINH DIEM - From the Peak of Power to Betrayal by the Americans | VIETNAM WAR P.3

Video produced by CDTeam
Video animation inspired by Johnny Harris.

Imagine you are in the Republic of Vietnam in the 1950s. After 9 years of arduous fighting, you have finally defeated the colonialists who had oppressed your country for centuries.

This victory was hailed as a global earthquake, marking the first time a colonial nation had achieved independence by defeating its oppressors. You liberate cities across the country, and peace and unity seem imminent.

But when you attend the Geneva Accords, your dreams are shattered. The major powers want to temporarily divide your country with an arbitrary line. Despite all you've been through and achieved, they refuse to grant you unity.

You accept the division, but you want the line to tilt towards the South, expanding your territory. Yet, those who are supposed to be your allies force you to accept losses to serve their own purposes.

As a young nation emerging from war, the last thing you want is to be isolated by your supposed allies. So, you endure as the dividing line creeps northward, at the 17th parallel.

They tell you to wait; in 1956, you'll achieve unity after a general election. You're indignant. What was the point of shedding blood against France if someone else decides your elections? Yet, you swallow your anger because you know, as does even those unfriendly to you, that you and leader Ho Chi Minh will win.

Life isn't a dream. In the South, there's a rise of a figure. This figure, along with early allies, will lead you into one of the most influential conflicts in modern history, the Vietnam War.
