In 2001, news of a royal massacre in Nepal shocked the world. Nine members of the royal family, including the King and Queen, had been killed. But as the country mourned, the United Nations and other international actors were more concerned about a separate crisis in the country. An underreported yet rapidly escalating insurgency, led by a communist rebel group called the Maoists, had by then claimed over 2,000 lives.

We speak with local civil society activists, international peacemakers and the warring parties themselves to uncover the little-known story. What drove the Maoists to war in the first place? How did the determined interventions by both domestic and global actors work to resolve the conflict? And when it was finally signed in 2006, how did the historic Comprehensive Peace Accord forever change Nepal?
