The story of Jonah, found in the Book of Jonah in the Old Testament, is a compelling tale of obedience, repentance, and God's mercy. Jonah, a prophet, is commanded by God to go to the city of Nineveh and preach against its wickedness. However, Jonah attempts to flee from God's command by boarding a ship headed for Tarshish. A great storm arises, and the sailors, realizing that Jonah is the cause, throw him overboard. Jonah is swallowed by a great fish, where he spends three days and three nights praying for deliverance. God hears Jonah's prayers and commands the fish to spit him out onto dry land. Jonah then goes to Nineveh and delivers God’s message, leading the people to repent. In response, God shows mercy and spares the city. The story highlights themes of divine compassion, the importance of obedience to God's will, and the power of repentance.
