Venus is the second planet from the Sun and the brightest object in the night sky after the Moon. It is sometimes called Earth’s sister planet because of its similar size and mass, but it has very different conditions. Venus has a thick atmosphere of mostly carbon dioxide, which traps heat and makes it the hottest planet in the solar system, with an average surface temperature of about 462 °C (864 °F). Venus also rotates very slowly and in the opposite direction of most other planets, meaning that a day on Venus lasts longer than a year and the Sun rises in the west and sets in the east. Venus has no natural satellites and no magnetic field. It has a rocky surface with many volcanoes, craters, mountains and plains. Venus is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty, and has been explored by many spacecraft since the 1960s.
