Violin Concerto, Op. 14 by Samuel Barber (1939)
Movement 1: Allegro
Nathanael Kumar, Euphonium
Linda Boianova, Piano
Second movement: • Barber: Violin Concerto, II. Andante ...
My euphonium arrangement of the first movement of Barber's "Violin Concerto", played here on my sophomore recital in the Eastman School of Music's Howard Hanson Hall. An enormous thanks to Dr. Linda Boianova for playing with me, and to Dr. Justin Benavidez for his invaluable guidance in preparing the repertoire for this recital! And much gratitude also to @ArcoRecordings for their excellent streaming and recording services!
This violin concerto is a masterclass in lyrical writing and melody. Not only are Barber's themes beautiful and memorable, but they're also developed in ingenious ways over the movements. The result is a particularly satisfying piece for performers and the audiences alike. As one of the most lyrical of the major violin concertos (and also one with minimal double-stopping), it made for a perfect euphonium transcription!
