Since we, as humans, first evolved in Africa, we probably also first used medicinal plants in Africa. Plants are the historical basis for almost all medicine. That makes African medicinal plants especially important to us as a species! This series is a celebration of some of the medicinal plants in Southern Africa that continue to be used by healers to this day.

This is the introductory episode in the series. In this episode I briefly review the history of medicinal plant use by humans and look at how we have come, in the relatively short time of our existence, to develop such a broad knowledge of medicinal plants and their uses. Subsequent episodes will delve into individual species, looking at both their traditional use and what we know of them from a contemporary scientific perspective.
