Imagine taking shelter in your basement. The sound of bullets striking your house. Residents of Gettysburg did not have to imagine during the fighting in July 1863. Many houses on the southern end of the town sustained lasting damage that you can still see today. Confederate sharpshooters occupied windows in these houses and fired on Union troops positioned on Cemetery Hill during the fighting on July 2-3. Of course, Union sharpshooters returned fire on the confederate positions. Historian Tim Smith highlights some of these buildings and discusses the fighting that took place at those locations.

Several of the sites house popular restaurants today:

Mr. G's Ice Cream (Winebrenner House)
Farnsworth House (Harvey Sweney House)
