Riverside Plaza, Riverside, California. Happy New Year!! Wow this place has history! This shopping center, Riverside Plaza, was built in 1957 with 1 anchor, a local department store named Harris. There was also a Woolworth, Rexall Drugs, and more! It was added onto in 1966 with an eastern expansion, adding a Grant City and a local grocery store Vons. Grant City closed in the 1970's and Montgomery Wards took over the building. In 1984, most of the original center was enclosed into a small mall. In the late 1990's, Harris was bought out by Gottshalks, another local brand, and the store was rebranded Harris-Gottschalks, later becoming Gottshalks. In 2001, Montgomery Wards closed, leaving the building empty. In the early-mid 2000's the entire center (minus Gottshalks) was torn down and redeveloped. By this time, Safeway had bought out Vons and wanted a bigger store. The redevelopment was completed, adding new stores (including some attached to the Gottshalks building). A theater was added near the demolished Wards building and Vons was expanded. In 2009, Gottshalks closed, and Forever21 took over. I was told by an employee that in 2013, Forever21 will be moving down to the Borders building and IKEA will take over this building. I will have to get back here with my camera to retake these, because IKEA will probably rip them out and install new Otis or KONE elevators. This is the only building in the complex that is original, and more then 1 story. One elevator was moded by Gottschalks, and the other was in the middle of the mod when the store closed, and F21 never finished it. Same with the 3rd floor escalators. Plus, nothing is on 3.

Update; Feb 3, 2014: Just over a year ago, F21 closed. The building is currently being remodeled and possibly expanded by the center to add new tenants. Yes, tenants. These elevators, if they have not already been ripped out, might become service elevators, or shafts could be merged to install a freight elevator. The fate of these elevators most certainly ends in doom, as the building is being cut into 4 pieces. I'm not sure what the new floor plan will be, but judging by the renderings, I have 2 guesses. #1: The north part will house a big new tenant taking up all 3 floors, but only half the floor. The south end will house 4 tenants; 1 on the ground level (Nordstrom more then likely), and 2 with entrances on Level 2. A new platform is being built so an external escalator can provide access the stores. I'm assuming an elevator (maybe glass) will also connect to the platform to provide access. Both of the level 2 tenant spaces will be 2 stories. Or #2: Tenant 4 on the north side will be single story much like the Nordstrom in the fact that it will be a single story tenant. G will be split between Nordstrom and tenant 4, and tenants 2 and 3 (2nd level) will take up half of 2 and 3 each. Also, Forever 21 did take over the smaller Borders store and did a complete renovation on it.
