Abstract: Our understanding of earthquakes and their consequent landslide hazards has improved greatly over the last decade. Yet, while we are good at identifying the initial direct impacts, we are far less capable of understanding the chronic hazards and impacts that earthquakes trigger, such as losses from ongoing landslide hazards in the months and years following an earthquake. Consequently, our current planning focusses only on the immediate impacts, ignoring the longer-term planning that is vital to our recovery. This seminar will explore the complexities of ongoing hazards from earthquake-triggered landslides and their chronic impacts, exploring ongoing research in Nepal and New Zealand to understand, and predict, these processes to enable better, more informed post-earthquake recovery.

Biography: Tom’s research focusses on developing a greater understanding of earthquake hazards and disaster risk. In particular, he is interested in modelling earthquake-triggered landslides and their consequent impacts on people and critical lifelines. Tom works on understanding how these landslides change and evolve following an earthquake and how this affects the longer-term post-earthquake recovery. He has worked on a range of earthquake disasters, including the 2010-11 Canterbury Earthquake Sequence, 2015 Nepal earthquake, and 2016 Kaikōura-Hurunui earthquake. Tom’s work involves a broad range of techniques including geospatial modelling, scenario modelling, risk analysis, and statistical analyses. He has worked throughout New Zealand and the Himalaya, including Nepal and Bhutan.
