Few of us can pass up the opportunity to get out there and take pictures in the snow, and back in 1978, such an opportunity arose for Somerset filmmaker Wit Budzynski.

The start of his film showing the impact of the snow — and the blizzards that followed — set the scene:

"On Saturday evening 18 February 1978 the worst blizzard in over 30 years swept through the West Country. Towns and villages everywhere were cut off as huge 20 to 30 foot drifts of snow made roads impassable and stranded many motorists.

"All roads from Yeovil were blocked and traffic in the town was at a standstill.

"On Sunday evening 19th of February a fresh fall of snow driven by gale force winds further added to the chaos.

"On Monday 20th of February the full extent of the freak weather was visible and the beleaguered townsfolk were starting to dig themselves out . . . "
