Mahalaya is a day of religious significance in Hinduism that marks the beginning of the nine-day-long Navratri festival. It is celebrated as the day when Goddess Durga begins her journey from her heavenly abode in Kailash to her maternal home on Earth.
Rituals
On Mahalaya, people perform various rituals, including Pitru Tarpan and Pind Daan, to honor their ancestors. These rituals are believed to help ancestors get salvation and free them from the cycle of birth and death. Some Hindu households also perform these rituals on the banks of the River Ganga.
Celebrations
Mahalaya is celebrated with great enthusiasm in states like West Bengal, Odisha, Tripura, Assam, and Karnataka. Bengalis wake up early in the morning to listen to the "Mahishasura Mardini" songs and mantras, which invoke the Goddess.
The British also celebrated Durga Puja in India, starting in 1765. The practice continued until 1840.
