The American William "Bill" Tilden (1893-1953) was a winner of seven US and three Wimbledon championships and was the top men's singles player of the 1920s. He turned professional at the end of 1930 and was a key figure in establishing the professional circuit. He continued playing the pro circuit until the age of 58.
