To put things in perspective this is a timeline of lunar exploration attempts and the struggle to set foot on the moon.

Starting with Pioneer 0 in August 1958 until the landmark Apollo 11 mission in July 1969 there have been a total of 65 missions aimed at moon. Within this decade only 29 of these missions were successful/partially successful.
