I've recently made friends with a very bright, talented young photographer that really wants to shoot fashion but does more weddings to pay the bills. She used to enjoy weddings, but now that she has big, high quality cameras, lenses and other tools... she''s dreading weddings. Bridezillas? nope. Hard to attract customers? nope. endless hours of post processing? Bingo.
The first step is to disengage from the idea that "in order to be a pro you must shoot RAW" because as a guy who has a rather high end custom printing business I see all kinds of files from all kinds of photographers and I don't care what camera or format you shoot in, as long as it makes the images you like and your clients buy - it's all good in the 'hood. Look, it's ok to shoot in jpeg mode. Really. In fact it's actually significantly more profitable if you are a portrait or event shooter to do so if you are comfy doing it.
The next step is the tough one - the photographer that shoots RAW and has 5 hours of post processing needs to realize that if magically they could reduce that to 1 hour, it would be more fun, less stressful and more profitable too. And if they can realize that the vast majority of RAW shooters do so because they do not have the confidence in their ability - or their camera's ability to shoot a file that requires no repairs in post - they are in a good spot. Post processing is for adding value to your images - not for repairing exposure and color problems that other photographers could set the same camera / flash / LED correctly and totally avoid. That's the part that gets people mad. I'm sorry if you are angered by that but if we were to use your gear and my expensive printing facility I could easily prove it to you and help you to move on in a more efficient and profitable way. Here's more in this video - just think about it please?
Thanks!
