A devastating landslide occurred at the early hours of July 30, 2024 in Wayanad District, Kerala, taking lives and destroying homes in the villages of Punjirimattom, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala. An eight-member team, led by Dr. Maneesha V Ramesh, Provost, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, and expert members from the Amrita Center for Wireless Networks & Applications (AWNA) and Amrita School for Sustainable Futures, visited the site to assess the impacted areas. The team was sent by Amrita’s Chancellor, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. ‪@Amma‬ has committed to fund the deployment of the Amrita Landslide Early Warning System (A-LEWS) there.

This video captures a haunting aerial view of the catastrophic damage. The magnitude of destruction is staggering—443 lives lost, 247 acres of land shifted, and over ₹1,200 crore worth of property lost. It is one of the most devastating natural disasters in Wayanad’s history. Displaced families and shattered communities now face the immense challenge of rebuilding their lives.

Let us remember and honour those who perished in this tragedy, and together, work towards a safer future.
