Based on a true event, the film tells the story of 24-year-old Dee Roberts (Nicole Beharie). In the US election year of the Bush/Gore presidential election in 2000, the African-American woman and single mother of four children was wrongly suspected of drug possession and was targeted in a drug raid. With the support of her mother (Alfre Woodard), who looks after the children, Dee fights in court against the powerful prosecutor (Michael O'Keefe).
