There are some similarities to taking a history in medical patients but there are certainly some subtleties in surgery that are important.

If you can believe it I've been taking my pain history the same way every time since I was a third year medical student.

I was lucky enough to have a surgery resident teach me the SRNOPDSARA method and it has been my go to way of asking questions ever since.

If you're interested in taking a deep dive into the acute abdomen I've put together this video where I review there SRNOPDSARA method, discuss differential diagnoses and the physical exam.
