#nyclife #keeponmoving #kingcanyon #documentary #puffin #penguin #polarbear Tokyo may be the same in some places, but New York City has many pigeons. Especially around 1990, when I lived in Manhattan, there were more than several hundred pigeons flying in flocks all over the city.
In recent years, the Times Square area has been redeveloped and we don't see as many pigeons as we used to, but in the Central Park area, for example, many pigeons still hang out in the valleys of high-rise buildings.

The first half of this video is a recording of a winter day when we tried to save a pigeon that was weak and cowering on the side of the road. That day, the temperature was below freezing and the wind was cold. So we took the pigeon back to our apartment, hoping that if we could restore its strength in a warm place, the pigeon would somehow survive.

At the end of the video is a look at the penguins and puffins at the Central Park Zoo. They survived the harsh winter in a temperature-controlled area with ease. Well, it's a zoo, of course. And then, the polar bear, who love the cold, was full of energy anyway. (Kazuhiko Iimura)

弱った鳩を助けたい & セントラルパーク動物園＝パフィン、ペンギン、白熊（vol.2C）

東京も場所によっては同じかもしれないけど、ともかくニューヨークには鳩が多い。私が住んでいた1990年前後についていえば、マンハッタンのいたるところで鳩が群れをなして飛んでいた。
近年、タイムズスクエア周辺は再開発が進んで以前ほど鳩を見かけなくなったけれど、セントラルパーク周辺などは今でも多くの鳩が高層ビルの谷間で屯している。

今回の動画前半は、弱りきって道端にうずくまっていた鳩をどうにか助けようと試みた冬の日の記録。気温は氷点下で冷たい風が頬に痛い午後だった。だから少しでも暖かな場所で鳩の体力を回復させれば何とか助けられるんじゃないか…ということでアパートに連れて帰った。

動画後半はセントラルパーク動物園のペンギン、パフィン。彼らは温度管理された場所で元気に厳しい冬を乗り切っていた。まあ動物園なんだから当然だけど。もちろん寒さが大好きなシロクマも！（飯村和彦）
