Reigning World Champion Michelle Kwan battled a sinus infection and came from behind after a tough Short Program, to get silver behind Russia's Maria Butyrskaya.
excerpt from the Chicago Tribune:
"DESPITE LOW MARKS, KWAN TOPS QUALIFYING GROUP
Five-point-six.
For Michelle Kwan, the most elegant and stylish figure skater in the world, the score was jarring, even if it came only in the qualifying round of the world championships. It was like a critic deciding Baryshnikov had lost a step or Pavarotti should go back to singing in the shower.
...
What Kwan did was the best possible under the circumstances, given a sinus infection that has her on antibiotics and a night of fitful sleep caused by the illness and jet lag. She had struggled badly through a practice session earlier in the week.
“When you’re not skating well, you get a little uneasy,” Kwan said. “I’m glad I have a day in between (qualifying and the short program), so I can get myself back together.”
Michelle Wingshan Kwan (born July 7, 1980) is a retired competitive figure skater and diplomat serving as United States Ambassador to Belize. In figure skating Kwan is a two-time Olymedalist (silver in 1998, bronze in 2002), a five-time World champion (1996, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003) and a nine-time U.S. champion (1996, 1998–2005). She is tied with Maribel Vinson for the all-time National Championship record. (wikipedia)
The event used the former 6.0 system (using a scale from 0.0 to 6.0 to determine the judge's preferred ranking), which was later replaced from 2004 by the ISU Judging System (the 'code of points') where each element contains a pre-set base value that is affected by its quality of execution.
