Cuquío Jalisco
Cuquío is a Mexican town, head of the homonymous municipality located in the state of Jalisco, within the Central region.
Its name is derived from the word Cuixui, which means kite, and is interpreted as “place of kites”, or in Tarasco cuquío “place of toads”. The founding of the town is attributed to the Purépechas (Tarascos) who repeatedly raided those valleys after the Saltpeter War. The Coquias tribe settled in La Cofradía, 2 kilometers from the current town, from whose name it is conjectured that the name comes from. It also depended on the Tonalteca kingdom.
Historical review:

In 1530 Nuño de Guzmán conquered the region and established his main center of operations there. The headquarters of the township was in Tlacotlán until 1690 when it moved to Cuquío and remained there until Independence.

It is known that the Mayor in 1695 was Don Juan Polaco and the construction of the temple began in 1762, finishing in 1834.

In 1823 it was designated a party with a town hall; and in the decree of March 27, 1824, it was constituted as a department of the State and has the category of town.

In the decree of March 13, 1837, Cuquío was established as the head of the party. In September 1846 it was declared the head of the department of the Canton of Guadalajara.

Cuquío es una localidad mexicana, cabecera del municipio homónimo situada en el estado de Jalisco, dentro de la región Centro
Su nombre se deriva de la palabra Cuixui, que significa milano, y se interpreta como “lugar de milanos”, o en tarasco cuquío “lugar de sapos”. La fundación del poblado se adjudica a los purépechas (tarascos) que incursionaron repetidas veces por esos valles después de la Guerra del Salitre. La tribu de los coquias se asentó en La Cofradía, a 2 kilómetros del actual poblado, de cuyo nombre se conjetura que le viene la denominación. Dependió además del reino Tonalteca.
Reseña histórica:

En 1530 Nuño de Guzmán conquistó la región y estableció en ella su principal centro de operaciones. En Tlacotlán estuvo la sede del corregimiento hasta 1690 en que pasó a Cuquío y ahí perduró hasta la Independencia.

Se sabe que el Alcalde Mayor en 1695, fue don Juan Polaco y la construcción del templo se inició en 1762, terminándose en 1834.

En 1823 fue designado partido con ayuntamiento; y en el decreto del 27 de marzo de 1824 se constituye en departamento del Estado y tiene categoría de villa.

En el decreto del 13 de marzo de 1837 se dispone que Cuquío sea cabecera de partido. En septiembre de 1846 es declarado como cabecera de departamento del Cantón de Guadalajara.
