[1] he only uses "moshi" here, rather than the much more common "moshimoshi". There's a belief that demons or ghosts can't say the same thing twice in a row, so if you answer someone who calls out with a single "moshi" you might get your soul stolen. (This is called 一声呼び for those looking - yes, sources vary on whether this is why "moshimoshi" is used as a greeting over the phone, but it is definitely based in real folklore fact regardless.) So, this is a tacit note that this person we're speaking with is... possibly not human.
