Kumartuli is a famous locality in Kolkata, known for its traditional potters' quarters. Since the year 1950, the locality has been in the business of sculpting high quality idols of Hindu deities. It is home to several talented potters who toil tirelessly to create clay idols. The karigars or artists usually craft idols of gods and goddesses passionately from raw clay in their workshops. The karigars live and work in that space. If you enter these workshops, you will find rows of idols on either side. Idol making takes place here from June to February, and caters to various festivals. The biggest occasion is however, Durga Puja. The ambience around here before puja is chaotic, as everybody is busy in getting all their work finished. Both male and female idol makers can be seen in Kumartuli.
