Description about the video:

Using the brush pen is pretty simple..all you need to know or the three things that i really focus on are these

-LINE Control
-Line weights
-Practice

1. LINE CONTROL

First thing you need you to know when it comes to inking with a brush pen is LINE CONTROL. And how do you control the line, it’s by controlling the pen and how do you control the pen, by controlling the hand…

You need to have such control over your hands and be able to take the pen where you need it go..not where it goes..and that comes with practice…

So here’s a simple routine I give out to people who are starting out to ink with a brush pen…

Take out a piece of paper and your brush pen and try this….

Draw 6 horizontal straight lines...of uniform width, this is important.

Then draw 6 vertical lines of uniform width.

Then draw curves the same way
Then reverse curves,
Then waves
Longer waves, shorter waves and so on.

So now you have practised uniform line control…

Now we are going to control the pressure of the brush to carry the line weights of those line…

When it comes to the Brush Pen, the more pressure you apply on the paper, the thicker the lines are….

So now, you repeat the same thing that you did with the uniform line width,

And Start PRACTISING LINE WEIGHTS.

Draw 6 horizontal lines from thin to thick
Then vertical from thin to thick
And curves, waves and everything from thin to thick….

Make sure you do all of these with deliberate focus.

What you are doing here learning to create that mind muscle connection and build the skill of line control along with learning to apply the right kind of pressure on the pen.

Next up is the fun part…

the DRAWING

2. LINE WEIGHT

The coolest thing about the brush pen is it ability to create different line variations.
And the question i get most often is...how do you decide where the line needs to be thick and where it need to be thin.

Well it pretty simple….
Take this stick for example and think of this stick as a line you’ve drawn with a brush pen…

If you take this stick bring it closer to you it becomes bigger and thicker...if bring it farther away from you, it becomes smaller and thinner.

The same principle applies to the lines that you are drawing...its an object in 3d space..

With that in mind, a good rule of thumb to follow is, make the lines thick for the objects that are closer to you and make it thin for the objects that are farther away from you…

And also make thick on the shadow areas and make it thin on areas where the light hits the object.

Every drawing that you draw is combination of multiple forms that are on different planes...some parts of that object are closer to you and some parts of it are farther away from you…

The third thing that you need to focus on when it comes to getting better at using the brush pen is

3. PRACTICE.

You have to use the brush pen on a daily basis, use it on your sketches books to ink your sketches, use it daily, mileage, mileage and mileage, is what you need.

Take up a challenge like Inktober or 100 days of sketching and use the brush pen as your main medium.

And trust me, at the end of, YOU WILL GET BETTER.
