Many pond owners wonder how big your pond needs to be so that they can safely hold koi without endangering the animals. For more information about the pond, subscribe to our channel and visit our guide: http://bit.ly/koipon-ratgeber

The koi is a schooling fish, which means that at least three to five fish should always be kept. In the case of animals of average size, a pond volume between 5000 and 10,000 would already be appropriate for this, in order to enable the koi carp to be kept in the fish pond to a certain extent.

The size of the koi, or their further growth, is an important factor that should be included in the planning and considerations of the pond owner. May Tosai, young animals of about a year, also have a manageable body size of 12-15 cm, the fish usually easily reach a length of 60 cm and more after a few years - and the pond rarely grows with them.

With a koi size of 60 cm, each animal should have at least 1000 l pond water, 1500-2000 l would be better, ie a pond volume of 1.5-2 m³.

Adult koi, on the other hand, already need 10 m³ pond volume per fish. If you consider the necessary attitude of the koi in the group, the ideal size of such a garden pond quickly lies in a range between 20,000 l and 40,000 with appropriate fish stock.

What comes after that not only requires a lot of technical effort and space, but above all the necessary financial strength. The more koi you want to put in the pond (and the bigger the fish), the more extensive the system must be - and the more money you have to spend. It is not only the purchase of the fish pond and the animals that are expensive, but also their entertainment. Water treatment, technical equipment, balanced and quality feed and medication; All of this must be done in the appropriate dimensions so that the koi are also doing well in the long term.
