HMS GANGES.

The Royal Naval training establishment at Shotley known as HMS Ganges was established in 1905 to prepare school leaving boys for naval service.
It had a reputation for it's tough and brutal at times methods of training where the boys that went in marched out as men.
It is particularly famous for its 44 m high mast taken from an old Naval boat, we're all boys during training where required to ascend during mast manning ceremonies.
Having seen around 160,000 boys through its gate it was eventually closed in 1976 went for some time during the 1980s and 90s its was used as a residential centre for civilian police officers to complete their basic training but since their departure the site which had already been largely demolished over the decades sits abandoned with the future of the remaining buildings uncertain.
