The season opener for the Lions in 2004 was a breath of fresh air after the recent downfall of the overall program. Although it only lasted for one week, it was nice to see offensive dominance and the ole' "bend but don't break" defense put together a blowout. Akron simply could not plug up any holes in Penn State's running game as two backs went over the 100 yard mark. And quarterback Zack Mills became the first ever player under Joe Paterno to run for a touchdown, pass for a touchdown and catch a touchdown all in one game. Akron's veteran quarterback Charlie Frye came into the game with huge numbers and many accomplishments. He got his completions, especially early on, but then he could do little of anything else.

Penn State's Top Performers:

Tony Hunt: 8 carries, 129 yards, TD
Austin Scott: 10 carries, 115 yards, 2 TDs
Zack Mills: Passing TD, rushing TD, receiving TD
Anwar Phillips: 2 interceptions

Penn State opens the year with a win to get off on the right foot in 2004. Akron opened with the loss (0-1) and finished 2004 with a 6-5 record as a member of the MAC Eastern Division.
